Special Olympics Dominica were given a hero’s welcome on Saturday following their impressive performances during the 2019 Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi.
The team arrived at the Ferry Terminal, Roseau, to huge celebrations from family members, government dignitaries, and well-wishers among others.
National Director of Special Olympics Dominica, Mr. Ainsworth Irish says “I’m extremely delighted. The people coming here to welcome us is a signal honor that person’s realize that the Special Olympic athletes put Dominica high on the agenda.”
“Special Olympics is not an event, it is a movement that works towards helping persons with determination to move forward, to experience joy, and to demonstrate courage,” Irish said.
Meantime, Minister for Sports, Hon. Justina Charles commended the athletes for their participation in the 2019 Special Olympics World Games.
“All of you made us proud…you are the reason why we are here this morning and we are very, very proud of you,” she said.
She stated further “This is just the beginning of things to come. I see the potential in them, I see the excitement and when you make them feel good they go out there and even excel further.”
“That is all they need, the little motivation, the little push so that they know there are people standing with them.”
Dominica captured 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals at this year’s event.
The 2019 Special Olympics World Games was a multi-sport event for athletes with intellectual disabilities in the tradition of the Special Olympics movement. It was held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from March 14–21, 2019.
