Shane Shillingford, Desron Maloney and Kaveem Hodge guided the Windward Island Volcanoes to a 3-wicket victory over Barbados Pride of Sunday in the opening of the Regional 4-day Championship.
Set 270 to win, debutant Desron Maloney played an important knock of 83 off 196 balls hitting 12 fours in the process, a striker rate of 42.3.
Maloney found support in his captain, Kaveem Hodge, after losing his opening partner Devon Smith for 8 and the Volcanoes score on 19 after 5.5 overs.
The two stitched a solid 109-run partnership before Hodge fell for 60 to Jonathan Carter, living the Windies 128/2 after 41.3 overs. Maloney was again involved in another solid partnership of 60 with Kirk Edwards (35).
“It was really pleasing to see. Everybody pulled their weight and it took a total team effort to pull of this victory,” said the Captain of the Windward Island Volcanoes team, Kaveem Hodge. “It was good to see Shane [Shillingford] back in the midst taking seven wickets and Desron Maloney scoring eighty-three in the second innings on his home ground. So everybody had a part to play,” he added.
Shane Shillingfrod ripped through Barbados’ top-order before he claimed the wickets of Kyle Mayers (5), Ashely Nurse (23), and Jomel Warrican (31) to finish with impressive figures of 7/105, a total of nine wickets in the entire match.
“Yeah obviously I wasn’t pleased with my performance in the first innings, it was just one of my bad days I think but I knew in the second innings my team especially would be expecting something great from me so I went out there and tried my best, concentrate and bowl ball by ball and put the ball in the right areas,” Shane Shillingford said.
Winwards winning by 3 wickets.
